E3 2010
The most hyped up E3 I’ve seen a long time, even more so than 2006. People are expecting big things from the big three industry heads, just thought I’d chime in and offer what I think (and hope) will happen.
- Nintendo
Perhaps the company with the largest amount of pressure on them. The internet is rife with speculation on the 3DS, the Vitality Sensor and, of course, the next iteration in the Zelda franchise.
The recent surge in interest in 3D has also sparked heavy discussion among the internet, whether it’s in film or in gaming. While I’ll save the 3D on home consoles debate for another time, I can totally see it working on a hand-held; only one person plays on one console at the time, meaning a head tracking camera can be used. No glasses! Much better than everyone having to put on a pair of glasses to play a split screen multi-player game on a home console.
The Vitality sensor is interesting, but will we ever see it used properly outside of a “Wii Vitality” health related game? Probably not, let’s face it.
There is unbelievable hype surrounding The Legend of Zelda, especially when you consider the amount of information we have about it. Both Miyamoto and Aonuma have stated that this game is going to change things up for the series, which is just bound to get people talking. People are speculating it’s going to have guns, it’s going to be a Majora’s Mask sequel, it’s going to be futuristic, the main mode of travel will be by air, the master sword is going to have a conciousness, the list goes on. I personally don’t know what to think, it really could turn out to be incredibly crazy, or it could turn out to be Twilight Princess 2.
I would love for F-Zero, PilotWings, Pikmin 3 and/or a Donkey Kong platformer to appear.
Oh, also, Golden Sun DS!
- Microsoft
A lot of pressure on MS this year, as their motion control solution, Project Natal has come under much scrutiny this past year (BAM! There it is!). In many demoes the motion control games (specifically the ones that use the player’s full body) have all seemed pretty wonky. But hey, Rare are going to show something (hopefully). I’m more excited about the Minority Report style interactions with the interface that Natal provides than what it does. Imagine swiping through the air to select a movie to watch from your collection, or a TV show to watch. Also, facial and vocal recognition is very exciting. Can’t say I’m interested in all that much from Halo: Reach or Gears of War 3 as they’re not my cup of tea. I also wouldn’t be surprised at an Xbox Slim getting announced.
- Sony
Sony have already dissipated most of the pressure on them by showing off Playstation Move before E3, so I personally can’t think of anything that’s going to come from them. There’s Gran Turismo 5, The Last Guardian and Final Fantasy XIV. That’s all I can think of on the games side. I wouldn’t be surprised if they at least announced they were developing a PSP2, to try and steal some of the 3DS’ thunder.
